Multiple Piece Canvas Art Sets - Polyptych Oil Paintings

Polyptych Oil Paintings are a form of Canvas Art, which has become an extremely popular choice for the modern home. The term 'Polyptych' is used to describe any multiple panel painting of more than three sections. Two (Diptych), four (Tetraptych), five (Pentaptych), even six piece (Hexatych) Canvas Art Sets are also available, and favored by the modern collector. All multiple Canvas Art Sets work within the same concepts of the more familiar, classic, Triptych Paintings. Traditionally, Triptych Paintings were comprised of three panels, of which, the central panel was the largest. The two smaller side panel paintings (although sometimes they might be of equal size), often referred to as 'wings', would be attached by hinges to the centre panel. Nowadays, modern Canvas Art Sets are rarely joined, unlike the classic Polyptych Paintings.

Multiple panel, Polyptych Oil Paintings, were particularly popular during the Renaissance, especially with painters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Hans Melming. From the Celtic Churches of Western England, to the Byzantine Churches of the East; from the Middle Ages, Polyptych Paintings were somewhat an 'accepted' and 'standard' format for decorating the Altars of Churches and Cathedrals. The theme, therefore, more often than not, would be religious, and each 'wing', although relative, would compliment the main, central panel. The term 'Triptych' has its roots in ancient Greece, originally derived from the word 'Triptychos'. However, it was during the Middle Ages that the term 'Triptych' was adopted and applied to three panel, Polyptych Paintings. 'Triptych' was originally the name given to the writing tablets which were used in Ancient Rome. They too had a centre panel, and two 'wing' panels either side, also attached by hinges.

Among the most famous Polyptych Oil Paintings are the 'Het Lam Gods', Dutch, literally meaning, and sometimes referred to as, 'The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb', but more simply and regularly referred to as, 'The Lamb of God'. Originally, these Polyptych Paintings were displayed in the 'Joost Vijt' Chapel, at the Ghent Cathedral, in Belgium. Hence, these Polyptych Paintings are also known as, 'The Gent Alter Piece'. Joost Vijt, a Dutch merchant and a successful financier, originally commissioned the set from Hubert Van Eyck. When Hubert died in 1426, before the project was completed, his young brother, Jan Van Eyck, finished the work. Altogether, twenty four pieces, hinged together, make up the Gent Alter Piece; An incredible example of Polyptych Paintings. Highly reflective of the new concepts, within painting, at the time. That was, letting go of the more 'idealized', classic, impressions, and embracing the 'real world', through observing and depicting nature in an exact way.

The Gent Alter Piece truly accomplished and monumental work of art. A notion reflected by Jan Van Eyck who inscribed 'maior quo nemo repertus', onto the frame in fourteen thirty two, when the complete set of Polyptych Paintings were finally finished. The Latin inscription means 'greater than anyone', and was written by Jan in remembrance, and as a sign of respect to his brother. Both of which, undoubtedly, were duly deserved. Unfortunately, the inscription was destroyed, along with the original frame of the centre piece, during the Protestant Reformation, which began in fifteen seventeen. It is believed that the original frame may have even incorporated clockwork mechanisms, to move the panels, and possibly, even music. A single panel was stolen in nineteen thirty four, and to this day, has never been recuperated. Because of this, in nineteen forty five, the missing piece, known as 'The Last Judges', was copied by Artist, Jef Vanderveken.
