Young Virgin Auto-Sodomized by the Horns of Her Own Chastity is a hand painted oil on canvas reproduction of the original created by Salvador Dali in 1954. While Salvador Dali was renowned for his eccentricities and attention grabbing gilded nature this art work has to be one of his most provocative: And perhaps it is no shock to discover the original painting was once part of the collection at the Playboy mansion in Los Angeles.

Dali entered many trends and phases throughout his artistic life: Although his surrealist visions became the oeuvre of his work from the thirties. During the fifties many of the figures depicted within his art works were created using the form of the Rhinoceros horn: As is the case here. According to Dali as the four horns encompass and threaten to, "sodomise the callipygian figure” the young girl “is effectively (auto-) sodomised by her own constitution." – This painting explained in a way only possible by the artist known as Salvador Dali! Dali originally set out to reproduce The Lacemaker by Vermeer: However, the finished oil painting is looked upon by some as more a rendition of an earlier painting of the Artist’s sister at a window created in 1925 – Known as Figure at a Window. It is thought Dali’s intention was to rebuke her after she had published a somewhat negative biography of him. In fact the figure of the young woman was based upon a photograph published in a 1930’s pornographic magazine. Nevertheless, in the eyes of the artist this oil painting was a paradox – “This painting, which has an erotic appearance, is the chastest of all."
