In his earlier works featuring Bathers the women were portrayed as somewhat dominant temptresses: A stark comparison to the statuesque and elegant figures portrayed in Les Grandes Baigneuses which was completed just moths before the artist passed away in 1906. The Women Bathers reflects his later works which approached the physical AND the spiritual: This being a milestone in his progression from fear of the erotic into comfortable submission.

Curiously, the eroticism of Cézanne’s work is often overlooked: Perhaps simply outshone by his unique approach to color and form that made him a revolutionary. This is a wonderful oil painting that truly captures the progression and incredible talent of Cézanne.
