Vincent van Gogh
The life of
Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh was befallen with tragedy and void of the
artistic recognition this incredible artist deserved: Indeed, it was reported
that his last words (spoken in French) to his younger brother Theodore whom he
adored were, "La
tristesse durera toujours" – Which means "The sadness will last
forever”. And it seems this would be too true for Theodore who was buried next
to him just six months later at the cemetery in Auvers-sur-Oise.
Throughout
their lives Vincent and his brother Theodore (who was just four years younger)
were extremely close and exchanged letters frequently. In the ultimate letter
to his brother Van Gogh revealed that while he had not produced any children,
he had created a progeny: His oil paintings. Indeed, Vincent Van Gogh’s oil
paintings undoubtedly represent his dedication to his ‘offspring’. His legacy
was neatly and accurately described and summarized by the famous British Art
Historian Simon Michael Schama: "Van
Gogh did have a child of course: Expressionism - And many, many heirs."
It has been well documented
that Vincent Van Gogh was the artist who gave the artistic language the
Expressionists used to open up a new painterly dimension: A place that went
beyond the surface – that superficial veil we so readily perceive as truth – Expressionism
reached beyond this and toward a more complex, deeper set of truths. This was a
philosophical as well as physical, profound and extended reality. The freedom,
color and style of artists such as Matisse investigated this new dimension. This
would be the same for the German Expressionists and the Abstract Expressionists
working throughout the forties and fifties: Such as Pollock and Willem de
Kooning.
This
unfortunate artist did not begin painting until his early twenties and died at
the age of thirty seven: Yet Vincent Van Gogh produced more than nine hundred
oil paintings during his short artistic life. He only
ever sold one painting prior to his death on 29th
July 1890. The Red Vineyard was created in
November 1888, just two years before his death. This piece was purchased by Belgian
Impressionist painter and art collector Anna Boch for just 400francs - First
exhibited in 1890 at the Les XX annual exhibition in Brussels: Today ‘The Red
Vineyard’ is on permanent exhibition at Russia’s famous Pushkin Museum of Fine
Art in Moscow.
While the child of Van Gogh was Expressionism: His heirs would be
Fauvism and Abstraction: Although his influence is evident within the work of
so many modern and contemporary artists. Vincent Van Gogh spent the last years
of his life suffering from a mental illness – It is believed this might well
have been Bipolar Disorder. While Van Gogh may have only sold one oil painting
in his lifetime, he was highly regarded among his contemporaries. His work was
exhibited for the first time toward the end of the 1880’s – Just a few years
before his death. Since then, his fame increased among dealers and critics
alike.
Upon his death the fame of Vincent Van Gogh
continued to increase: His oil paintings becoming more revered and admired than
ever before. Eleven years after his death a large memorial exhibition was held
in Paris. This first dedicated exhibition of Van Gogh’s work was opened to the
public on March 17th 1901. It included seventy one of Van Gogh’s oil
paintings and was followed
by a retrospective in 1905. A similar exhibition was also organized in 1905
in Amsterdam. His works were also included in the famous 1912 Sonderbund Exhibiton in Cologne and the
1913 New York Armory Show: Paul Cassirer was the man who organized the first
dedicatedVan Gogh Exhibitionheld inBerlin, Germany in 1914.
It is believed that Van Gogh’s mother destroyed some of her son’s oil
paintings – why, we will never know. His was a troubled life that ended in
suicide. Even so, since his death Vincent Van Gogh has lived on through his
work and had a profound impact upon collectors and artists alike; since the
beginning of the twentieth century. Today some of his art works are among the
most expensive oil paintings in the world. An incredible accomplishment for any
man: He achieved so much in his short artistic life. Vincent Van Gogh is among
the most sincere artists ever to live. A man truly dedicated to his work and
his vision – And today finally, we see that vision. Welcome to the world of
Vincent Van Gogh.
