Tropical Aquarium will appeal greatly to those who are intrigued by the subconscious. The Surrealist Movement was a revolution. In stark comparison to so many Modern Art movements, it’s concepts were not based solely upon artistic innovation. It was concerned with the liberation of the subconscious mind, within society, and within art. The origins of Surrealism lie within the Dada, 'anti art', revolt. A movement which began in 1916, and ended in 1966. When Andre Breton, the guiding spirit of the Surrealist Movement, passed away.

Tropical Aquarium reveals a topsy turvy world. The painting is divided into two halves. Or, in reality, do we have four quarters? Above and below the water, in conjunction with the left and right. Is this not akin to the subconscious and conscious mind? Above the water we can clearly see a reality, and yet below? Below the water is another world, another consciousness. And, as we all know, we must look beneath the water to truly know what it holds. We gain very little knowledge, only ever skimming above.

Interestingly, the Artist has portrayed a world of light, color, and wonderful marine life below the surface. Above is merely a green and pleasant land, in comparison. And, although this has it’s own beauty, it does not shine quite so brightly, as does the almost magical, Tropical Aquarium.
