There is an old Cree Indian proverb: When the last tree is cut, when the last river has been poisoned, when the last fish has been caught, then we will find out that we can't eat money. This three piece canvas art set is an intriguing composition: Depicting a single lone tree with red and green apple-like fruit – One could easily recall the Tree of Knowledge. However, there is no lush Garden of Eden portrayed in this oil painting. This tree stands alone in a sparse landscape.

The Cree Indians were the largest native tribe in North America. Before ‘civilized’ white people arrived they were considered uncivilized. And yet, they did not need locks or prisons because they had no thieves among them. For the Cree the value of a person was not determined by their property and wealth. To this they did not need written laws therefore did not need lawyers. Because there was no money and ‘wealth’ they did not need to cheat each other. Their priorities were different and this proverb is significant of the changes which ‘civilized’ society brought with it. In more than one hundred years this proverb has never been more significant: Therefore an apt subject for contemporary art.

The artist has not portrayed any specific class of tree: Although one could say they have perhaps taken the first most significant tree – the Tree of Knowledge – as their inspiration. To which the tree is symbolic of that which was first and that which will be last – In this way this represents The Last Tree: A fascinating abstract art work that could not fail to stimulate both visually and philosophically.
