This is a highly accurate hand painted oil on canvas reproduction of Salvador Dali’s original oil on panel art work The Ghost of Vermeer of Delft Which Can Be Used as a Table - Originally created in 1934. By the thirties the oeuvre of Dali’s work was established. His influences were vast: From the renaissance masters such as Velazquez, Raphael and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer to Picasso and Miró.

The Ghost of Vermeer oil painting reflects the Ghost of Johannes Vermeer a seventeenth century genre painter who produced a relatively small portfolio of art works during his lifetime and only enjoyed moderate recognition while he was alive. Vermeer was renowned for his affinity with light and color. His works faded into obscurity after his death but was revived during the nineteenth century: Today he is regarded as one of the Masters of the Dutch Golden Age.

In the Ghost of Vermeer Dali depicts the artist as a gangly dark figure. His back is toward the viewer which some feel reflects The Art of Painting, one of Vermeer’s most complex works with regards to symbolism. Vermeer’s Ghost is kneeling: One stubbed leg is outstretched and has a bottle and glass upon it; used akin to a table top. His right arm rests upon a crutch. The body-come-furniture depiction and crutches or stilts became commonplace within the artists work throughout the rest of his life. Indeed, this is a wonderful early example of what was to become this artist’s distinctive and world renowned style.
