Step back in time, to the streets of Arles, in September 1888. This Canvas Art print, is an accurate copy of Vincent Van Gogh's Cafe Terrace At Night. An oil painting that was never signed, although it was mentioned by Van Gogh, in letters to his brother, Theodore. Some people know this work as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum; because it does, in fact, depict a cafe that was situated at the north east corner of the 'Place du Forum', in Arles.
Even today there remains a cafe terrace in that exact same spot. However, since October 2003, it has been known as the 'Cafe Van Gogh'.
It is possible to sit down in the same place Van Gogh set up his easel. Something that was not entirely usual in 1888. It is possible to tell, from the perspective of the oil painting, that Van Gogh was facing southward. The artificial lighting of the cafe terrace stands out bodly, against the forced obscurity of the 'Rue de Palais'. That is, the street leading away and beyond the Place du Forum. Overhead, silhouetted against a starry night is a church steeple, which today, is home to the Musee Lapidaire. To the right, a small corner shop marks the mid way perspective, easing the viewer past the cafe, and down the narrow cobbled street of Arles. What a wonderful way to spend an evening!
