The Bedroom at Arles is a rendition of the second oil painting Van Gogh completed, depicting his bedroom in Arles. Altogether, van Gogh completed three different versions. And, although all three look extremely similar, each do have their own particular 'exclusivity' . In this instance, the green colors in the floor indicate this is a copy of the second version. An oil on canvas painting, completed by Van Gogh, in the September of 1889. Today, the original is owned, and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago.
This oil painting reveals Van Gogh's somewhat irregular shaped bedroom, in his famous Yellow House. The four pictures on the wall, to the right, change for each version. To the right, is a door, which opened out onto the upper floor staircase. The window, to the left of Van Gogh's small wooden bed, looked out onto the public gardens of Place Lamartine. One can easily imagine Van Gogh sitting on the small chair underneath, watching the world go by. The door to the left leads to the guest bedroom. The very same bedroom Van Gogh adorned with the sunflower oil paintings, in preparation for Gaugins visit. A wonderful glimpse into the private world of the painter.
