The 1929 version of The Ants depicted big inky black shiny ants on a real hessian background. In the bottom right hand corner a cut out of a half clothed frightened young woman shies away from the clusters of somewhat grotesque looking insects.
As was often the case, an artwork by Dali featuring ants invariably touches upon anxiety. The use of ants as symbols of death and decay is relative to an experience the artist had as a child. He had kept a wounded bat it his hideaway overnight and when he returned in the morning it was covered in a mass of ants: Hence his association.
