This oil painting is a reproduction of one of Monet’s most famous collections: A series of landmark, landscape paintings along the River Thames in London; which Monet began after he completed his Rouen Cathedral collection and before the Japanese Bridge collection created at his home in Giverney.
The Houses of Parliament collection depicts Westminster at varying times of the day in various weather conditions. This version clearly captures the somewhat infamous fog which invariably engulfed the Thames during this era: Indeed, Monet loved this quirk - I love London. It is a mass, an ensemble, and it is so simple. Then, in London, what I love, above all, is the fog – Claude Monet once wrote.
Indeed, Monet was SO intent upon capturing the effect of fog upon the Houses of Parliament and the Thames he began more than one hundred oil paintings of the scene: Of which less than forty were actually finished – And unlike many of his earlier landscape paintings, they were finished in his studio.
Seagulls The Thames Houses of Parliament clearly captures the intent of Monet’s original art works. It is temporal and extremely atmospheric. While Monet painted some of London’s greatest landmarks it was the affect of the light and fog upon those scenes which truly captivated him: And indeed, the result was equally captivating.
