Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali was a Spanish Catalan surrealist painter who was born in figueres on the 11th of May 1904 and was christened Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, 1st Marquis of Pubol.
Dali's father was a notary and middle-class lawyer who believed in a strict disciplinary approach to bringing up children but this was tempered by his wife, Felipa Domenech Ferres who was known to encourage her children to follow their dreams and aspirations. Dali was named after his older brother who died nine months before Salvador was born. Indeed at one stage Dali’s parents told him he was the reincarnation of his dead brother, a concept which Dali himself believed. Speaking of his dead brother, Dali said, 'we resembled each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections. He was probably a first version of myself but conceived too much in the absolute.
Dali's sister, Ana Maria wrote a book in 1949 entitled Dali ‘As Seen by His Sister’. Dali had studied drawing at drawing school and in 1916 discovered modern art on a holiday to Paris with his friend and local artist, Ramon Pichot. In 1917 Dali’s father organized an exhibition of Dali’s works at their family home and in 1919 Dali had his first exhibition at the Municipal Theater in Figueres.
In 1921 his mother, who Dali loved deeply died of breast cancer. Dali said at the time, 'my mother's death was the greatest blow I had experienced in my life. I worshipped her... I could not resign myself to the loss of a being on whom I counted to make invisible the unavoidable blemishes of my soul'. The following year his father married his deceased wife’s sister. Dali had a great respect and love for his aunt and therefore did not resent the union.
Dali was quite a flamboyant character and when he studied at the Academia de San Fernando (school of fine arts) he drew attention to himself with as a dandy and eccentric. This was mainly due to the clothes he wore and his style of hair. He wore his hair long and had side burns, stockings, coats and knee britches that had been fashionable in the 19th century. He would later popularize his style of flamboyant moustache Salvador Dali was a versatile artist and he contributed to photography, fashion and theatre, etc. Some of his works are sculptures and other objects. During the years 1941 to 1970 Dali created 39 jewels. The jewels contain moving parts and are very intricate in detail. The Jewels of Dali's collection can be seen at the Dalí Theater Museum in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, where it is on permanent exhibition.
Politics was to play a significant role as Dali emerged as an artist. He embraced both anarchism and communism but as he grew older his political allegiance changed. He wrote a book in 1970 called Dali on Dali and in it he proclaimed himself to be a monarchist and anarchist
Salvador Dali produced more than 1500 paintings in his time as well as producing book illustrations design for theatre sets and costumes, lithographs, dozens of sculptures and a nu
mber of drawings. He also collaborated on the movie Dali on Dali in 1965 with the director Jack Bond .
