Red Day’s Work is an intriguing piece of art as it bridges the gap between ‘primitive’ African art and modern abstractions, influenced by it. Traditional African art played an important role for the development of cubism. This interesting ‘transition’ in the artistic mind became possible because in general, African artworks tend to favor visual abstraction over naturalistic representation. It generalizes the stylistic norms and its ‘dynamic symmetry’, especially of the human figure. All these features make it especially favorable for improvisation with form and style.
In the beginning of the 20th century famous artists like Picasso, Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Modigliani were inspired by African art due to its supremely organized forms, combined with phenomenal expressive power. They studied and reacted to African art, which lead to reorganization of forms and the tendency to represent subjects in an abstract way. The encounter between Western and African art changed the status of visual art. Its purpose was no longer just purely aesthetic; fine art was transformed into a medium for philosophy and intellectual dialogue.
Red Day’s Work is an interesting combination of African and Western tradition, uniting the traditional subject of standing figures at work, with the abstract, two-dimensional mode of representation.
