The red Poppy has long been a potent symbol for Remembrance Day. The reason for this relates to the fact that scarlet corn poppies (popaver rhoeas) found across Western Europe will usually flourish once the ground has been disturbed: During the Napoleonic wars acres of once bare land was transformed into fields of Poppies which grew around the bodies of those soldiers which had fallen there. During WWI, as once again war raged throughout Europe, once again the Red Poppy flourished upon the battlefields. Canadian surgeon John Mc Crae spoke of the Poppy Fields in his poem titled ‘Flanders Fields’ and since then this flower has become a symbol for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
