Claude Monet created many series of paintings throughout his career. The artist would choose a landscape and work various studies of the same scene in different weather conditions, times of the day and the year. This oil painting – Poplars Four Trees – Is a sensitive and loyal reproduction of Monet’s The Four Trees created in 1891. Today the original hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The four trees (Poplars) were located along the marsh banks of the Epte River just a few kilometers outside the artist’s home in Giverney. Monet created the Poplar series during the summer and fall. He would take a small boot upstream to what can only be described as his floating studio which was moored along the riverbanks. Monet almost did not finish the Popular series: Which would certainly have been a great loss within the world of art. In 1891 the trees were owned by a nearby commune who decided to auction the trees off for lumber. Thankfully, Monet’s oil paintings were being snapped up by American collectors and the artist was able to purchase them until he had finished his series.
