This accurate hand painted reproduction has been immaculately executed: A fine homage to one of the greatest artist’s of the nineteenth century: An artist who was a revolutionary and who would lead the way from Impressionism through to the birth of Cubism. Cézanne’s original oil on paper mounted upon a wooden panel was titled L’Amour en plâtre - Still Life with Plaster Cupid- was created around 1894/95. Today it is on exhibition at London’s Courtauld Institute Galleries.

The Plaster Cupid central to this wonderful still life painting is believed to be a cast of a rendition of Eros by the sculptor Puget: A man Cézanne greatly admired because of his ability to make “marble move”. Cézanne created another version in 1985 which is now on display at the National Museum of Stockholm. They are unusual in that although Cézanne would often draw Sculpture; this was the only two instances throughout his career he featured a sculpture in his oil paintings.

This oil painting is a beautiful example of Cézanne’s ability to manipulate color, form and proportion: Clearly reiterating how Cézanne enjoyed playing with the paradoxes of space. Plaster Cupid and The Anatomy is a wonderfully eye-catching composition: The movement of the sculpture tinkering with the reality of what is Still Life.
