The distinctive rough, built style of Cézanne’s palette knife has been skillfully recaptured in this reproduction of the artist’s original oil on canvas composition created around 1866. This is a fabulous reproduction of early experimentation from the young Cézanne – Here we witness the development of Cézanne’s architectural style so recognisable within his mature works.

The objects are aligned horizontally and colors are mixed. The heavy palette knife and abandonment of his usual uniformed palette of mute colors was a short lived phase for the artist – A time referred to by Cézanne in later life as his Couillarde phase – Or ‘brutal’ phase. Most historians feel it was the work of provincial artist Adolphe Monticelli who inspired this experimental phase.

Today the original Sugar Bowl, Pears and Blue Cup is part of the collection at the Musee Granet in Cézanne’s beloved Aix-en-Provence. The original is a relatively small oil on canvas art work measuring just 30cm x 41cm. This reproduction is 91cm x 120cm: Much larger which only goes to enhance the original’s impact.
