Ocean Avenue is a surrealist painting that twists reality and recreates it through the author’s mindset. The title is indicative of that, combining the relatively incompatible notions of ocean and avenue. Then we notice that the shadows of the palms in the painting are actually the shadows of lampposts, bending over the ‘avenue’ leading to the deep blue ocean. The white birds fly in the corridor enclosed in the avenue, and the boats are also moving in the same plane. The middle panel of this three-set Canvas Art is the avenue where all action takes place.
Similar to this painting, surrealist works involve the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions. Surrealism means ‘beyond reality’ and it heightens reality through representing dream-like scenes. Recognizable images are usually presented in a fairly realistic manner but they possess quality that they don't have in real life. For example, they could be disproportionately large or small, or may show unrealistic behavior. As an example, one of the greatest surrealist painters, Salvador Dali, painted giant clocks that appeared to be melting. It is generally accepted that surrealist art depicts elements of the unconscious in a positive, though possibly disturbing, way.
