Nus was created by Pablo Picasso in 1934 and was once owned by Evelyn Sharp: An astute business woman who had amassed a fortune by the fifties which she invested in the arts as well as the stock market. Nus was sold at auction in 1997 for six million dollars. It is one of Picasso’s most fluid art works: Soft and weightless in ambience. The curious elongated and pliable octopus shaped figures of Nus are distinctive and while the style harks of classicism there are sure elements surrealism within this oil painting. Indeed while it ‘seems’ figurative the inter-changing forms make it impossible to differentiate one ‘body’ from the next.

Nus is a sharp contrast to much of Picasso’s work produced shortly afterward: Softer, lighter and curious. However, soon after this was created Picasso’s work would take on the ‘bullfight theme’ – Usually either dying or snorting. His mood changed initially because of his pending divorce from wife Olga: According to Picasso one of the worst times in his life. However, at the time Nus was painted he was enjoying his new relationship with Marie-Thérèse who became pregnant shortly after this was created.
