Nude and Still Life were Pablo Picasso’s two
most favored subjects. The original of this particular version, where the
artist has brought the two so specifically together, was produced in 1931. Nude
and Still Life is a colorful piece which reflects how the artist became more
bold toward the end of his career. In this way, many believe that Picasso
discovered the world of Neo Expressionism – Although at the time his work was
seriously misunderstood: Again, Picasso would reach beyond the vision of most
and so be ahead of his time...
The geometric
forms of Nude and Still Life are literal. Nude and Still Life displays how Picasso
evolved abstract and Cubist concepts over the years. His experimentation with
other artistic methods and concepts was regular: Even so, inevitably it would
be Cubism and abstraction that would remain his most avid passion.
During the thirties much of Picasso’s work
featured the Minotaur which had become a common symbol among the Surrealists.
When asked to explain the iconography and symbolism Picasso began to use during
this period he replied: “It isn’t up to the painter to define the
symbols. Otherwise it would be better if he wrote them out in so many words!
The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they
understand them.”
This is a hand
painted reproduction of one of Picasso’s more obscure art works: Which
instantly makes it ever more intriguing. Indeed, we are free to look at the
picture and interpret it as we understand it: And we can do this at leisure in
our own home: Perfect!
