Nude and Still Life were Pablo Picasso’s two most favored subjects. The original of this particular version, where the artist has brought the two so specifically together, was produced in 1931. During the thirties much of Picasso’s work featured the Minotaur which had become a common symbol among the Surrealists. When asked to explain the iconography and symbolism Picasso began to use during this period he replied: “It isn’t up to the painter to define the symbols. Otherwise it would be better if he wrote them out in so many words! The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they understand them.”
