Maya With a Doll is a hand painted limited edition canvas art work that reflects one of Picasso’s more well known oil paintings: Maya a la Poupee. The original composition was created in 1938 in the Cubist Abstract style Picasso is so renowned for. The original depicts Maia Widmaier-Picasso playing with her doll: This was the child of Picasso and his long term mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter.

Maya With a Doll is not an exact copy of Maya a la Poupee – It is a contemporary artists interpretation of the original oil painting. And although there are many similarities with regards to the overall impression, Maya With a Doll is quite individual.

The abstraction of Maya With a doll is more subtle, therefore more detail has been included and it is more realistic. It is as if the artist has set out to prove that although the original may be abstract it is still possible to take a lot of visual information from it. It should be remembered that this artist did NOT have Maya (Maia) in front of him: Nor a photograph: Just Picasso’s composition.

The colors of Maya with a Doll are not the same as the original and yet the overall impression of this oil painting remains in keeping with the original. Maya With a Doll is a successful dedication to Cubism and one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists.
