Maya au Bate is based upon Pablo Picasso’s Girl with a Boat (Maya Picasso)which was an oil painting he created in 1938 featuring his daughter Maya (Maia) playing with a boat. Today the original work is on permanent exhibition at Galerie Rosengart, Lucerne, in Switzerland: Maya With a Doll is owned by Diana Widmaier Picasso who is Maya’s daughter and so Picasso’s grand-daughter.

The same year Picasso produced another, similar oil painting of his daughter playing with a doll: Maya a la Poupee. Both the original oil paintings by Picasso were in the Abstract Cubist style that the artist primarily experimented, developing the ideas and methods relative to both throughout his auspicious career.

There are Many similarities between Maya au Bate and Picasso’s Girl With a Boat – Should we say, this version very much captures the essence of both the form and color of the original. Much of Picasso’s art work reflected his family and his life.
