This oil painting is a hand painted,
accurate oil on canvas reproduction of Picasso’s famous Marie-Thérèse Walter produced
in 1937: Two years after the birth of their daughter Maya was born and one year after he began a relationship
with Dora Maar.
Marie-Thérèse
Walterwas the model and mistress of Pablo
Picasso for many years. They met when she was in her early teens and Picasso
was in his mid forties, which was around 1927. In many of his earlier oil
painting of Marie she is depicted as a bright and youthful sunshine blond. For
example in Le Rêve(The
Dream) that was produced in 1932.
In this oil painting
Marie has a much older air about her: One that lacks the erotic ambience of
many of his earlier portraits. Colors are darker, less pure in hue. Forms are
sharper, less curvaceous and feminine than before. Her bright yellow hair is
now green: Is this green with envy?
Indeed Marie-Thérèse was
jealous of Picasso’s affection for Dora Maar. In 1936 Marie met Dora at his
studios by accident and Picasso encouraged a confrontation by saying "Why
don't you fight for me?" – Which they did and apparently Picasso saw this
a one of his finest moments!
Marie Terese is a
reproduction of among Picasso’s most famous oil paintings and it is steeped in
history with regards to the life and loves of the artist: Therefore, a must in
the collection for any Picasso admirer.
