Pablo Picasso met Teresa when she was just seventeen: While he was married to Olga Khokhlova - At the time he was forty-five. Despite the fact his relationship with the French girl was (supposedly) incognito at first they spent many years together and has a daughter Maya Widmaier-Picasso.

In many of his earlier portraits of Marie-Thérèse Walter she is depicted as a white or golden blond almost angelic girl. Later as their personal relationship evolved the portraits took on a much more erotic feel. Here she is much more properly portrayed with the formal brown clothing and high neckline. The band of daisies in her hair gives her a more childlike persona – A stark contrast to his later works of Marie.
