Paul Cézanne created over two hundred sketches, watercolour and pencil as well as painting featuring ‘Bathers’. Consistently with each version (most of which were produced from 1870 onwards) the viewer can see the artists gradual yet conclusive move away from more conventional interpretation and toward something entirely new – Indeed, many historians believe it was Cézanne who defined and so directed Impressionism: Picasso and Matisse defining him as the "the father of us all".

The progression of his work through the subject of the bathers was purposeful and the artist was cautious never to become enrolled into the latest ‘fad’. In this way his art works preserve the timelessness of classic art works and yet boldly strove forward leading the way for the twentieth century arts which subsequently evolved.
