In 1864 the coastal town of Honfleur was very popular with seascape and marine artists. Monet travelled there to work with contemporary Frederic Bazille in the spring. Together they worked en plein air along the cliffs and shores as well as venturing out into the neighboring countryside.

Bazille returned to Paris in the fall: Monet stayed on to capture the changes in weather and so light upon scenes around and about the town. This oil painting was created during that time and is one of two versions the artist completed. For Monet capturing the changes of light was fundamental to his work and unquestionably the warm autumn colors and diffused light of this painting display his ability to do so perfectly: A beautiful composition from the master of Impressionism.
