According to Dali the cylindrical illuminated imagery which makes up the vision for Inagural Gooseflesh became clear to him while rowing a boat in Cadeques in 1929. Which highlights the artist’s capacity to live within his dreamlike world consistent – As Dali once said, “I am Surrealism”: And indeed it does seem that this was not something Dali strived to look for: It was for him a natural state of mind.
Dali believes that his inspiration for Inagural Gooseflesh was born from a text he wrote entitled The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. In which he discussed the idea by which Saint Sebastian’s suffering was measurable as temperature is measured by a thermometer. Inagural Gooseflesh marks a significant milestone in the artist’s career and in this way is an Essential Dali.
