Guernica created by Pablo Picasso in 1937 has to be among the artist’s most famous art works. While the original was mural size it was created with oils on canvas, as is the reproduction canvas wall art we offer. Picasso chose to create this oil painting in monochrome - grisaille. The original is on display at the Museo Reina Sofia in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

Guernica is an iconic composition that was commissioned by the Spanish republican government for the 1937 Paris International Exposition. Picasso wanted to grab the world’s attention with regards to the atrocities which were happening during the Spanish Civil War: When Franco’s German allies bombed the Basque town of Guernica. It was put on display around the world as consequence.

Guernica depicts a suffering collection of people, animals, and buildings that are torn apart by the violence, chaos and tragedy of war. Today it remains an icon in that it remains a permanent reminder to all of the horrors war creates: It is effectively an Anti-War composition that seeks to enforce the importance of peace – And indeed at the time it did highlight the Spanish Civil War worldwide and so what was actually going on in this country. Without doubt this is an incredible work of art that will continue to inspire for many centuries to come.
