Tamara Lempicka was young and living in Paris when the Art Deco style was at its height. Born to wealthy Polish parents she fled the East and the Russian Revolution with her husband and enrolled to study art at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere. Lempicka world hard to define her particular style which was simple, flowing and geometric: Some might say a little abstract but most would undoubtedly say modern.

Sharp edges and bold color combine to create a bold and modern style. The clothing of the beautiful young Girl in Green With Gloves echoes the definite yet flowing and curvaceous lines of her hair giving the composition a strong three dimensional feel: And indeed there is a definite sense of eroticism in the way the breast and navel of the woman have been exaggerated through the fabric.

Tamara De Lempicka was a major figure within the Art deco movement from around 1925 and 1935. Her portraits are now famous around the world: Bur few are more recognized than that of The Girl in Green with gloves.
