This is an accurate and sensitive oil on canvas reproduction of Paul Cézanne’s The Card Players created around 1890 in his home town of Aix-en-Provence. The artist has captured the moment eloquently – One can almost cut the air with the suspense as these silent men concentrate on their hand: Despite the fact there is no money on the table!

The figures have an important, almost monumental feel. Cézanne has used a clean palette of blue hues to create atmosphere. Curiously, scientific research has concluded that he began with the finer details of the picture: Filling in the larger areas afterward. Altogether, indicating the focus of the artist was upon the card players - And in doing so Cézanne has truly captured the traditions and spirit of the men.

Cézanne also created two larger versions: One of which is part of the Barnes Foundation collection: Another (with two men playing cards) remains in a private collection and not been seen for around fifty years. This version of The Card Players took Cézanne around four years to complete. Over which period of time he would add layers of color to create incredible depth. Even so, The Card Players is a moment, not a continuation: And it is a moment captured uniquely in a way that only Cézanne is able.
