Oscar Claude Monet
Oscar Claude Monet, a French impressionist, created the method of Broken Color Painting. This method was created by using different shades of paint, which are painted in broken layers throughout the piece. This is the complete opposite of the smooth blend that traditional artwork goes for, and that it why it is so interesting. The patchwork of the different colors is atheistically pleasing, as it creates a surface illumination.
This was completely unheard of before Monet introduced it, that it why it was the 'the new painting'. As you can see in one of Monet's most famous painting, Water Lilies, Monet used quick brushstrokes throughout the pond so that the colors are bold and defined. This helped to bring texture to the painting, which would not be as dominant if Monet had used smooth brushstrokes.
Monet built textures using the tiny dabs of light, adding contours for definition and color harmonies. Led by Monet and his contemporary Impressionists, Broken Color Art was opposed to Ingres' (French, 1780-1867) carefully labored drawings and the absence of brush-strokes. The 'insurgents' made an unabashed use of brush strokes to express a rush of visual sensation personal to the respective artist. He also used slight strokes of bright colors throughout this painting, which intensified the scenery and made the piece even more brilliant.
There are several methods of creating this impressionistic art. One method is to coat the background of the painting with translucent paint and adding a variety of patterns and textures to the outer layer. Another method is to use different shades of the same color to define the light and dark areas of a painting. Sea sponges or cellulose are used to create a cloudy but soft finish to the painting. Dragging, also known as dry brushing is when an artist takes a dry brush and drags it through the wet paint, revealing the base color.
This method is great if you are trying to create texture. Spattering is a technique where the artist hits the paintbrush with a small piece of wood to splatter bits of paint over their work. Two techniques that can make artwork instantly appealing are ragging and rag rolling. These methods are done by covering a base color with a glaze color that is different from the base color. In ragging, the artist takes a piece of cloth, crumples it, and presses it against the glaze while it is still wet. Rag rolling is similar to ragging. Rag rolling consists of the artist taking a rag, folding it into a shape similar to a cylinder, and rolling it over the artwork.
These techniques were used frequently by the impressionists in the 19th century. Their method of Broken Color Painting was never seen before and this is why it caught on so quickly. Observers were astounded by the artwork that they were created, and were buying their art constantly.
Unfortunately, broken color painting is not used as widely today although there are still some artists that hold on to this method originally created by Monet, but other contemporary artists choose to use their own method. He had a huge impact on the direction that art has gone. Impressionistic art is a beauty, and should never be forgotten. Some of the most beautiful and expensive artwork is impressionist art.
