Welcome to the field of dreams. Take off your shoes and walk barefoot on the soft grass, lit by the marvelous fiery sky. Yes, you are walking inside a dream. The trees you will encounter in it are dream-like, and so are the clouds, the lawn, the sky. But where exactly lies the border between dreams in reality? How can we be sure which is which?
Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi has put the dream controversy in an impressive parable, “Once Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Zhuangzi. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuangzi. But he didn't know if he was Zhuangzi who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi.”
That’s why dreams are so unrealistically wonderful: because they are a parallel reality we all inhabit at night. Dreams are powerful and have influence on us. Having a nightmare can make us gloomy for hours, while a beautiful dream of flying, for example, may charge us positively.
The ‘field of dreams’ is a world that lures us at night, and keeps acting on us during the day.
