This Canvas Art looks like a patchwork of blue, brown and yellow; a patchwork of earthly tones, combined with the blue of the sea. It is soothing and pleasing to the eye; an exquisite example of high aesthetical achievement.
The Earth accommodates all other elements and it would be impossible for water, air and fire to exist without it. Many cultures regard it as the Mother of all people, animals, and plants that inhabit it. It gives us shelter, food, all the raw materials we need to survive.
The two-dimensional plane of Earth Tone Abstract plays with the old notion that the Earth was flat. Most ancient cultures believed in that, including the Ancient Greek culture until the classical period. The neatly arranged rectangular patches form an abstract ‘mappa mundi’, where the location of the continents and the seas is relative. Mappae mundi were Medieval European representations of the Earth. Although they may seem primitive and inaccurate to modern eyes, mappae mundi were never meant to be actual charts for navigation. They were schematic diagrams of the philosophy of the time and the larger ones illustrated the cardinal directions, distant lands, mythological places and events, exotic races, and even flora and fauna.
