This is a loyal rendition of the first version of Van Gogh's Dr Paul Gachet. One of the most sought after oil paintings by this famous Dutch artist. In 1990, the original was auctioned for a record breaking $75million. There are two versions of Dr Paul Gachet. Both are very similar, and were completed in 1890. Only months before Vincent Van Gogh so tragically passed away. Although very similar, it is easy to differentiate them from each other. In both versions, the good doctor is sitting down, leaning his elbow on a table, with his head in his right hand. A spray of the infamous Foxglove sits upon the table surface, which is half covered with a red cloth. Brush strokes are heavy and short. Not blended, as was the customary, Academy style of the period. Dr Paul Gachet represents an important, and credible milestone for Modern Art.
Van Gogh's style was groundbreaking, something that had never been seen before. And, why so many Academies and critics would reject his work. Later, this style would be adopted and experimented with by the Impressionists. Ultimately, being a turnkey for the development of many major art movements, of the early twentieth century. A truly authentic, modern art work, that would suit most styles of decor.
