Cut Metal is a curious and unusual oil painting that would very much suit contemporary environments. A minimalist work that reflects art at its most fundamental: And that is oil on canvas. This three piece composition is non-objective per se. However the single line through it thickly applied resembles a cut upon the canvas. The steel blue background against this rusty tear gives the viewer an impression of cut metal: As if the steel has been cut and pulled back to reveal a rusty under-layer.

This could perhaps be reference to modern twentieth century and classic artistic concepts with regards to painting: A new modern ‘steel’ layer which sought to replace those traditional concepts which had become out-dated and ‘rusty’ to modern artists. Around the mid nineteenth century new processes meant steel could be mass-produced and inexpensive: This was around the same time new artists began to question and ultimately move away from those classic concepts which had dictated painting and sculpture for centuries – A response to new advances in science and technology. This was a modern world and the arts needed to reflect this. In this way Cut Metal brings contemporary ideas to the canvas to create an aesthetically interesting composition that would suit minimalist and contemporary environments.
