Circle Squared is a very clever composition. As well as effective! It takes the impossible and makes it possible. At least, it gives the impression it is possible. Geometry is an ancient Egyptian word, which means 'measure of the earth'. And, 'squaring the circle' was a problem originally proposed and pondered over by those ancient geometers.
Is it possible to construct a square, using a measurable number of stages, with a ruler and set of compasses, which equals the area of any given circle? The circle representing the earth, which is the measure of everything in the universe.
It would seem in this world, anything is possible. Indeed, in this striking oil painting the circle has been squared. Or so the artist implies. However, in 1882 it was concluded that circling the square is impossible. Even so, within the realms of art we know, nothing is impossible.
In a modern world, the term 'squaring the circle' is used metaphorically, to express when someone has completed something logically. Or something has been completed successfully, that was believed to be, intuitively, impossible.
Without doubt, this composition is not only an intense and bold piece of art work, guaranteed to gain attention, regardless of where it is placed. It is also thought provoking and intensely symbolic.
