Christmas is an accurate hand painted reproduction of Salvador Dali’s Noel produced in 1946. It displays Dali’s excellent abilities as a draughtsman as well as his exaggerated and surreal perspective upon this world. Dali did not produce many oil paintings in the year of 1946: This oil painting Christmas is one of few. This is primarily due to the fact in 1946 Walt Disney engaged the artist to help him produce Destino: A cartoon based upon the song Destino written by Armando Dominguez.

In 1934 Dali was put on trial and consequently expelled from the official Surrealist group. His response was indifferent and ultimately revealed the truth - "I myself am surrealism." This oil painting was created twelve years afterward and reveals how despite his experimentation with other artistic medium and expulsion from the group, Dali never left the world of surrealism or painting.

From 1958 through to 1976 Dali created a Christmas Card design for Hoechst. The cards were sent to pharmacists and physicians throughout Spain and each had a greeting written by the artist himself. The designs would feature the Christmas tree more associated with central European culture than the Catholic Nativity scenes favored in Spain. The searching roots and branches pointing toward the sky that we see in this painting were used frequently by Dali in those designs: Symbolic of the relationship between substance and spirituality. This version of Christmas created in 1946 being the original and primary depiction of this allegory.
