The original Birth of Divinity was created by Salvador Dali in 1960, toward the end of his successful although controversial artistic career. This highly accurate hand painted reproduction oil painting is larger than the original. However, this is purely a technical matter with regards to the ability of the artist and takes nothing away from the reproduction itself: Dali’s work is highly detailed and he was a magnificent draughtsman. By enlarging the canvas it is easier for the artist to reproduce that detail accurately – Nothing more. However, in this way you can be surer the original detail has not been lost and the reproduction is indeed accurate.

The original Birth of Divinity by Dali is part of the collection owned by Mrs Henry J Heinz II who lives in New York: Therefore the original is rarely on public display. Dali spent the latter years of his life in Catalonia (from 1949). Birth of a Goddess was also produced in 1960 which is very different to Birth of Divinity: Which confirms that while certain elements tended to reappear in Dali’s work he approached each of them in a unique and surreal way. In many ways this oil painting marked a significant milestone in the artist’s career – After this he would direct his energies into various artistic media and away from surrealism. Therefore, Birth of Divinity would make a significant addition to any collection.
