Like his contemporaries Monet and Pissarro this oil painting titled Banks of the Loing, Saint Mammes can primarily be grouped by the landscape. From 1880 until around 1897 Alfred Sisley lived in or near the town of Moret which is situated on the Loing River. Moret was just a stone’s throw from Saint-Mammès which is located in the North Central lle-de-France region in the district of Fontainebleau. Saint Mammès also lies at the estuary where the Seine and Loing River join.

Sisley produced a series of oil painting of the riverbanks in this region: This particular version was created in 1885 and focuses upon the houses which stretched alongside the river and of course their reflection in the water – A classic study point of Impressionist artists: Particularly with Sisley’s contemporary Monet.

The Impressionists did exhibit several times in France yet it was the American art world that first recognized the significance of their work. Today Banks of the Loing, Saint Mammes is part of a private collection.
