Salvador Dali created more than fifteen hundred oil paintings during his extremely prolific artistic life: The majority of which can only be described as bizarre. Indeed, while he was a Surrealist and a fancier of Freud’s theories of how elements of reality can be a catalyst for dreams for the part not even the artists himself could entirely be exact with regards to how his compositions began. Autumn Cannibalism is a high quality reproduction of Dali’s original artwork created in 1936: Just after the outbreak of the Civil War in Spain.

This incredible oil painting was created during Dali’s more prominent Surreal period which was from 1929 to 1939: Easily apparent in the biomorphic shapes of the couple locked in their ‘cannibalistic’ embrace and the optical illusions used to build the composition. Indeed, the couple are literally eating each other upon the table top! The distant landscape is reminiscent of Spain’s dry plains and the apple upon the man’s head refers to the old legend of William Tell: Indicating the conflict in his own country which akin to the tale of Tell forced a father to shoot at his son.
