Apollo and Daphne was created by artist John William Waterhouse in 1908. This is among his mature works and reveals his more modern Pre-Raphaelite style: A wonderful combination of Pre-Raphaelite and Impressionist techniques.

Here we see Apollo, God of Prophecy, chasing Daphne along the banks of a river. Daphne was the beautiful daughter of Peneius the Greek River God. Daphne enjoyed wandering alone through the wilderness and was happy: Until one day Eros God of Love shot a flood of gold and lead tipped arrows at Apollo who was taunting him. A gold tipped arrow struck Apollo who immediately saw Daphne and so fell in love. However, Daphne was struck by a lead tipped arrow: Hence she is running away from Apollo – Entirely indifferent to his amorous advances.

Waterhouse has depicted the very point where Apollo – who had been relentlessly pursuing Daphne for longer than she could bear – is about to capture her. Instead and in desperation Daphne turns herself into a Laurel tree. In the picture this can be seen by the thick roots which have begun to entwine around her body.
