The Ansidei Madonna was originally created for the Ansidei Altarpiece, San Fiorenzo, Perugia in Italy by Raphael in 1505: The date believed to be highly accurate as this is the date inscribed on the mantle upon which the Virgin sits. This beautiful oil painting has become known worldwide as the Ansidei Madonna because the work was commissioned by Niccolò Ansidei for his family’s Chapel which was dedicated to Saint Nicolas of Bari who Raphael has placed to the right of the Virgin. To the left of the Virgin is St John the Baptist.

Raphael chose to accentuate several features of this composition. The steps up to the Virgin are extremely high. Not practical but instead exaggerated to ensure the Virgin sits above St Nicolas and St John: It also gives the viewer a sense of humbleness as they approach the Virgin. In addition, architecture of the throne is wrong; in that it is missing arms. However created in this way the changes bring a structural logic overall to this oil painting.
