All Saints I

The Lenbachhaus art museum (Stadtishe Galerie) in Munich houses three compositions which Kandinsky created using the theme All Saints Day in 1911. This version was originally titled All Saints Day I and there is also a small woodcut version using vivid red, yellow and blue primary colors owned by the MOMA (although not on permanent display) - Also created in 1911.

Another version titled All Saints I is a glass painting and much more figurative in comparison to this version, which is far more expressive as well as abstract. Indeed, this version is somewhere in-between the glass version and another version titled All Saints II which was executed in oils on canvas. All Saints II being the most abstract version of the series although one could also say the most expressive – Hence, Kandinsky has been marked in the history books as an abstract expressionist. In this way All Saints Day I marks the transition... beautifully.
