The original A vase With Oranges was created by Matisse in 1916. Since 1905 when Matisse long with a small group of artists known as ‘Le Fauves’ exhibited their work together at the Salon Automne they were inundated with severe criticism: To the point where money was extremely tight for Matisse and his family who had be crowned King of the Fauves. As a consequence from 1906 the fauve group declined.

An effigy of Nu Bleu created in 1907 was also burned at the armory show in 1913. Even so, today some of Matisse’s best works are art are considered to have been created from 1906 to 1917. A Vase with Oranges reflects the bright colors and hasty spontaneous almost unfinished style that Fauvist work tends to have. It is experimental, an investigation into understanding the world around us: As opposed to simply observing it. The paint is applied thickly making this still life more tactile – giving it a true physical presence.
