It is among this artist’s largest oil on canvas art works – A painter who invariably produced small yet highly detailed compositions. It was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in the same year of its creation and then at the Royal Academy in London one year later - In 1875.

The original was gifted to the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College in England by Arthur M. Loew in 1921 and remains there today.
