This is an incredibly accurate and sensitive hand painted copy of Marc Chagall’s original Midsummer Night's Dream - Songe d'une nuit d'été - which Chagall began around 1930 and took nine years to finish (although a somewhat extended length of time; for the majority of painters, deciding when a painting is finished is among the hardest decisions of all....)

Werner Haftmann, the author of Painting of the 20th Century (first published in 1954 and still a major reference book with regards to the history of modern art) stated that Chagall read this Shakespearean comedy. Chagall loved Myths and Folklore. Therefore it does not seem out of character for him to love this story; which relays the events leading to the marriage of Thesus and Hippolyta under a moonlight sky in a fairytale woodland: Indeed, the play remains one of the most popular in the world today.

Today the original hangs in the Musée de Peinture at de Sculpture in Grenoble, France. While Chagall experimented with many artistic styles – Cubism, Surrealism and Abstraction – he developed a style that was distinct and very much his own: And this oil painting A Midsummer Night's Dream is a true epitome of that style.
