Today the original A Favourite Custom oil on wood painting created by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1909 is part of the permanent exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London. Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema primarily created scenes of luxury and life in the Roman Empire. In this oil painting he depicts the Stabian baths of Pompeii. The women are shown playfully splashing each other while others undress in preparation behind. Of course, there is much adaptation in this painting as Pompeii was destroyed: Alma-Tadema based the composition on an archaeologist’s photograph of some ruins that were uncovered in 1824. He also improvised with his ‘trademark’ marble floors, basing the idea on what was usual for larger Imperial Roman Baths. However, this artist was a perfectionist and renowned for the research he would carry out before creating his oil paintings.
