Caring For Your First Oil Painting
If you are the proud owner of a new oil painting then you need to be aware of a few things. This new treasured possession needs to be taken care of and can't just be dusted every now and again as you would a picture in a frame. Newly painted oil paintings and canvas art can take a long time to dry despite the fact that they would appear to be dry to the touch. This may not apply to paintings that you have bought online or in store but would certainly apply to any that you have been creative enough to paint on your own. There are two distinctions that need to be made to a freshly painted oil painting - dry and cured.
Dry oil paintings can be dry after just a few days from completion although in some cases it can take a few weeks or even a month. This painting may not be cured however and this curing process can take up to a year to be complete. The oil painting itself might be dry enough to touch but chemically, it will not quite be finished yet and it is during this curing process that you will find the trickiest. If the oil painting or canvas art is not yet cured, it will be easier to damage the masterpiece which means that dusting your new art work will need to be done with a very soft brush or a very light blowing action. Anything more heavy duty than this can distort the colors and even rub the paint, tainting your precious masterpiece. p>
If you think that you can come up with a plan to cure your oil painting in the quickest time possible by covering it and leaving it safely stored in a cupboard somewhere then you are making a rather risky mistake especially if the oil painting has cost you a lot of money. The curing process of an oil painting will require oxygen to dry it and therefore pushing the picture into a frame of glass will actually increase the chances of it being damaged or distorted. Of course you can place your new canvas art into a frame if you wish but you will need to make sure that there is enough room between the glass and the picture itself to allow ventilation to occur especially if you want the art work to be passed down to next generations of your family.
An uncured oil painting will react to light and therefore should not be placed in direct sunlight or in extreme darkness. Darkness can cause the brighter pigments of the painting to become yellow and extreme light can cause the colors to fade. Of course after a year or so of owning your canvas art, you are free to hang it where you wish but it may be worth enquiring as to when the oil painting was completed before you decide to hand over your hard earned cash.
So, if you have decided upon oil paintings to complete the furnishings of your home then be smart. An antique oil painting will of course, be cured but one that you have bought from a gallery or even online may not so to keep your art in the best condition possible, ensure that you know how long it has been curing and also if there is any chance of you ruining the beauty of it simply by hanging it up on your wall.
